Frequently asked questions
Library & folders
Where does Notenbuch store my sheet music?
In the folder you pick during setup, for example in iCloud Drive or under “On My iPad”. Notenbuch keeps no hidden copy there: your PDFs and images stay ordinary files that you also see in the Files app. Subfolders show up as folders in the app.
If you pick no folder, the app uses a default folder of its own on the device.
How do I use my sheet music on several devices?
Choose the same folder in iCloud Drive on every device. Scores, annotations, score details and setlists are then kept in sync through iCloud.
When you set Notenbuch up on another device, the app notices and skips the intro. You still have to select the folder once, because for security reasons iOS asks for folder access on every device separately.
New scores don't show up in the library
- If the folder is in iCloud Drive, iOS sometimes downloads new files in the background first. The app shows a note and refreshes itself automatically.
- You can also refresh by hand: Settings → Re-scan.
- Supported formats are PDF files and images in JPG or PNG.
The app says the folder could not be read
This happens when the folder was renamed, moved or deleted, or when iOS reset the access permission. Select the folder again under Settings → Change folder. Your scores and annotations are still in the folder and reappear afterwards.
What happens to my sheet music if I delete the app?
Your folder is kept, including annotations and setlists in the hidden .notenbuch subfolder. After reinstalling, simply select the folder again. Only the app's own default folder is removed along with the app.
Import & export
How do I add new sheet music?
In the library, tap Import score (on the iPhone the + button). You then have two options:
- Choose file: PDFs or photos from the Files app. Several images are combined into one PDF.
- Camera: Notenbuch opens the iOS document scanner. It finds the page edges, straightens pages photographed at an angle and lifts the contrast. You can shoot several pages in a row; they all become one PDF.
You can also simply copy scores into your folder with the Files app.
My scans look grey and washed out
For older scans and grey PDFs there is Lift contrast: the paper turns white and the notes turn black. Pencil markings are kept.
Turn it on for a single score in its details (Lift contrast → Always), or for all of them under Settings → Score view. It affects the display and the PDF export only — your file is left untouched, and you can switch it off again at any time.
How do I pass on a score with my annotations?
Open the score and choose Export PDF. The app creates a PDF including your annotations and opens the share sheet, for example for Mail, AirDrop or “Save to Files”.
Practice & stage
How do I record my playing?
Open the score and tap the microphone in the top bar (on the iPhone in the ⋮ menu). While recording, the elapsed time runs at the top and you can keep turning pages as usual. Tapping again ends the recording.
You play back, rename and delete your recordings in the score details — all takes of a score sit there one below the other.
Starting a recording switches the metronome and the tuner off: there is only one microphone, and the click would otherwise end up on the recording.
Recordings are stored as audio files in your sheet music folder (hidden subfolder .notenbuch/recordings). If that folder is in iCloud Drive, they are available on your other devices too — and they take up space there.
Which Bluetooth pedals work?
Any pedal that connects as a Bluetooth keyboard works, for example AirTurn, PageFlip or iRig BlueTurn. Notenbuch responds to the arrow keys and to Page Up/Down:
- Forward: right arrow, down arrow or Page Down
- Back: left arrow, up arrow or Page Up
Setting the pedal up:
- Pair the pedal once in the iOS settings under Bluetooth. Switch it to its arrow-key mode if needed.
- Turn on Settings → Bluetooth page-turner pedal in Notenbuch.
The viewer then picks the pedal up automatically.
The tuner shows nothing
The tuner needs access to the microphone. Allow it in the iOS settings under Notenbuch → Microphone. The audio signal is analysed on the device only and never recorded.
The reference pitch (440 Hz by default) can be set between 400 and 480 Hz in the tuner.
How do I create a setlist?
Under SETLISTS in the sidebar you create a new setlist and add scores from anywhere in your library. Drag entries to change the order. In the viewer you then page through the whole setlist continuously.
App
Which languages does Notenbuch speak?
German, English, French, Dutch, Italian and Spanish. The app follows your device language; if that is none of the six, it shows English.
You can change the language at any time under Settings → Language.
Can I see the intro again?
Yes, under Settings → Show the intro again.
